Chafer grubs are usually easy to spot just a few centimetres down in the soil. Leatherjackets, however, are much harder to see. One of the best warning signs is the presence of crane flies (daddy longlegs) hovering over your lawn in late summer. These are the adult form of leatherjackets and often indicate they’re laying eggs that will hatch in September/October.
